SB 887B; threat to public access TV

SB 887B is on its way to the Governor, having been overwhelmingly re-passed in the House. We've sent him a letter asking him to veto it....but that's probably unlikely, given the Nike presence. So we'll be stuck with a real stinker of a bill for a couple years. The key thing to watch for is whether or not any of our member communities uses it to circumvent its voter annexation charter amendment. Please let us know immediately if you see that happening anywhere. I'm pleased to say that all of my legislative representatives & senators voted against the bill.

Also, below is a message from Courtney Scott (we've worked with her in the past) regarding public access TV that she asked us to pass along.

We'll get a session wrap up newsletter out soon.

Jerry

Subject: threat to public access

Hi Jerry,

I wanted to apprise you of two federal bills that will effectively destroy public access television. The Senate bill is sponsored by Sen. Gordon Smith. What it means in a nutshell is that cable and phone companies do not want to pay franchise fees to support public access. They have been working for years to get what they want, and now they are succeeding. I am writing to ask if you would be willing to send a note to the OCVA list letting them know of the situation. I am enclosing a link to the Alliance for Community Media's website with a full explanation and call for action. In the past, Jeff Lamb has been on my cable program, which at that time was "Beyond the Front Page". I now have a program called "Mad as Hell TV!" and perhaps you would like to come on sometime in the near future to discuss the issues that OCVA faces.

Basically what people can do is to contact Senator Smith and their congressional representative to tell them they value public access television and to not support these bills.

Information on Senate Bill 1349 and House Bill H.R. 3146: http://www.alliancecm.org

Thanks Jerry.

Best,

Courtney Scott
