2005-06-03 AlertOne More Favor: HB 2722Left unmentioned in the celebration of the successful exit of HB 2484 from committee yesterday was another success story that should be of interest to all who have been working for annexation reform. This was the passage of HB 2722 out of the same committee, also on a 4:1 "do pass" vote with Sen. Burdick again the lone "no." We've been remiss in not following this one more closely. It has taken a nearly identical path with similar support as HB 2484 thus far. AND NOW, AS WITH HB 2484, WE NEED TO GET IT THROUGH THE SENATE. Here is the background behind HB 2722: As a result of Beaverton's annexation onslaught, a large area outside the city called Cedar Hills said it would incorporate as a separate city rather than be snagged by Beaverton. In response, Beaverton's mayor advised those citizens that he would invoke the "3 mile rule" to prevent them from doing that. Under current law, a city can veto incorporation within 3 miles of its border. Subsequently, Rep. Greenlick and others introduced HB 2722 to revoke that authority. And the bill has now made it to the Senate floor. As you might expect, the League doesn't like it and can be expected to try to kill it. When you're talking to your senators about HB 2484, please include a request for them to also support HB 2722. If you've already contacted your senators about HB 2484 (which hopefully you have), then we're asking you to hit the keys again for HB 2722. Our apologies to our Raleigh Hills contingent and others for not following this bill more closely. Have a great weekend, everyone. Jerry Ritter This page last modified on 2005-11-16 08:29. |
