2005-06-18 AlertSB 887B VoteThe vote in the House was 35 - 22 to pass HB 887B. It now heads to the Senate for Concurrence. The fact that it wasn't a blowout gives me hope that we can still get Section 3 changed to protect our charter amendments. If you want to keep your message to your senators simple, just focus on the problem with city voters: "Dear Senator _________: PLEASE VOTE NO ON SB-887B! The Senate just passed HB 2484 by a 23-3 margin to give both city voters and those targeted for annexation an equal vote in ORS-195 annexations. That was the right thing to do - thank you! Now, SB 887B is coming back to you for concurrence with the House amendments. Section 3 of the amended bill REMOVES CITY VOTERS FROM THE ORS-195 PROCESS FOR 2 Years! In so doing, it also effectively nullifies the "voter annexation" charter amendments in more than 30 Oregon cities which will anger many more people. What can possibly be the sense of doing that? Removing city voters is just as unfair as allowing them to trample those in the unincorporated areas on annexation votes. Please do not enact this flawed legislation until the language in Section 3 is amended to reflect that in HB 2484." Respectfully, Your name Everyone who wants to protect your voter annexation charter amendments needs to contact your senators immediately and try to get as many people as you can in your communities to do likewise. Even though it has other serious problems, we don't want to kill SB-887B: we merely want to make a simple, common sense change to Section 3 of the bill.
