Brief update on SB 887B

The SB 887B conference committee was scheduled to meet last week, but the meeting was cancelled, presumably due to the "vacation" taken by the House.

It is reported that Nike has dug in its heels on the 35 year exemption, but the current feeling is that the Legislature isn't willing to give them that much time.

We've received a couple messages indicating that there is still a chance the problems with section 3 that we find so objectionable can be addressed.

There is also a chance that the bill may not make it out of conference. Its provisions help nobody but a few big businesses and Section 3 makes absolutely no sense now that the Governor has signed HB 2484. It has gotten bad press in the Metro area, one reporter describing the bill as "bloated as 5-day old road kill and smells just about as appealing."

We'll keep you posted. Anybody got any champagne left? OCVA sent a thank you note to the Governor & we would encourage all of you to do likewise.

Jerry Ritter
Secretary, OCVA
