Island Bill(s) Hearings!

For those of you - and we know there are many - who are concerned about ISLAND ANNEXATION, here's your chance to be heard:

The Senate Environment & Land Use Committee is scheduled to hear testimony on SB 886 and SB 887 on Monday, March 14, 3 PM, Hearing Room "B" at the Capitol.

The former requires a public hearing prior to a city annexing territory by ordinance or decree. This doesn't seem to me to be of much use (although I have not thoroughly studied the bill). But the latter is an outright repeal of the island annexation language in ORS 222.750 - among other provisions.

Staff requests 25 copies of your testimony. You should contact Katie Lowry at 503-986-1639 the morning of the hearing to make sure it's still on. As you know by now, these schedules can change on short notice.

Islands and "cherrystemming" are hot topics with thousands of folks, and not just in Washington County.

We've already provided you with contact information for the committee. Now would be the time to make our views known! If you cannot attend the meeting, make sure you get your emails and phone calls in to the committee members. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, it will take NUMBERS to give us any chance of success.

Jerry Ritter
Secretary, OCVA
